You don't see too many photos of moose taken in th You don't see too many photos of moose taken in the snow for a few reasons. I'd guess that the best reason is that this is a tough hunt! The moose aren't all that interested in coming to the call. At the end of the rut, they are played out and need to rest. With winter knocking hard on the door, there's also a good chance that a deep freeze or snow dump could make life difficult for the hunter. I could go on, but you get the picture. I was fortunate to take this great bull after Father Winter had knocked and was opening the door.

We are not born knowing how to move through the hi We are not born knowing how to move through the hills. I'm sharing a few techniques I use to save energy, move more quickly and safely, and increase my chances of success when chasing mountain game. We only have so many steps and so much elevation in our legs for each day and each hunt, and I make my energy take me further and with less suffering by recognizing that there is more to mountain trekking than most kinds of movement. Watch the video at the link in my bio and let me know what you think of these tips in the comments below!

We don't usually think of moose hunting as the kin We don't usually think of moose hunting as the kind of hunting when we need to do a lot of glassing. While standing in a good spot and calling can be successful, my favoured approach is to use optics to locate bulls. Once I have identified a good one, I plan a stalk and get close enough to begin calling. You can see in these images how the team was all glassing. We knew there was a bull out there, but the terrain provided a lot of cover and it wasn't easy to locate him. Once we located him and his cows, we took our bearings and crossed the lake to stalk. Within a short time, we had our bull down. #BBD (big bull down).

If you don't GPS your tent, this image should chan If you don't GPS your tent, this image should change your mind quickly. Whether with your GPS watch, phone or a proper GPS handheld unit, modern hunters have all the tools they need never to lose camp again. You can see that my @kuiu_official Summit Star 1P tent is perfectly camouflaged in this terrain. Add darkness, snow storm or fatigue to the mix, and you could run in circles or sleep under your sil tarp if you can't locate your camp. I check with the boys whenever we leave camp to see if someone has marked the location. No matter how obvious you think the tent appears on the land, you'll never regret marking the spot. As I recall, this mountain block had very little water. I even took the time to mark the water seeps for the next time I came here. #fieldtip

Every hunter should understand and prioritize taking care of their rifle and optics in the field. When the time comes to take a shot, knowing that the gun has been cared for through adverse conditions will bring you peace of mind and lead to better shooting. I protect my optics and action with a specialized scope cover. Covering the muzzle with electrical tape before and after shooting is also a best practice. Watch this video to see my system. I'd love to hear if you have any tips or tricks, so leave a comment below with your feedback.

Mountain hunting is physically and mentally draining. We all stare at the ground before us as we climb and push now and again. Unfortunately, this is a terrible way to move through the country. Whenever I find myself looking at the ground, I correct myself and look up, around and behind me. Navigating through the landscape requires a hunter to use their best judgement and take advantage of any information they have about the terrain ahead. Is the footing sound? Is it steep? Is there water on that ridge? Will I be able to glass for animals down there?
When you add the weight of a heavy pack, route selection is acutely important. The energy cost of traversing thick bush may exceed a longer route on good ground.
Experienced hunters will know all this intuitively, while newer hunters may learn this hard. Do yourself a favour and watch this video!
